The Department of Tourism of Consell de Mallorca held the 2nd Forum on Tourism Governance and Sustainability in Mallorca this Friday at the Es Quarter Theater in Petra. This is the second of eight meetings that will be held in the coming months in different areas of Mallorca.
Throughout the day, the more than 50 attendees were able to listen, participate, and debate the future strategies and objectives that the newly created Island Directorate of Tourism, focused on governance and sustainability, has for Mallorca. Both its head, Pedro Mas, and the Regional Minister of Tourism, José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, outlined the main guidelines that will govern the department's term of office at the opening of the forum.
The Regional Minister of Tourism himself was responsible for closing the forum and, during his speech, stated that the commitment for this term is to promote and foster a "responsible tourism model within our environmental and social limits." To achieve this, Rodríguez added, it is essential to work on "tourism governance, in which the active participation of the community and the sector in decision-making regarding tourism is fundamental, as is that of the city councils."
The day began with an opening address by Marcial Rodríguez, in which he highlighted the importance of being able to leverage "Mallorca's leadership to change the way people see us from abroad, achieving effective social and environmental coexistence within a framework of sustainable development for tourism."
Pedro Mas, for his part, announced shortly afterward during his speech that "collaboration with all city councils will be active and ongoing throughout the entire term, in order to gain firsthand knowledge of the development of tourism in each territory and at each moment. We start from the conviction that they are all different," he added.
In addition to these presentations throughout the morning, a roundtable discussion was held with the participation of the mayors of Algaida and Porreres, the mayors of Ariany, Lloret de Vistalegre, Maria de la Salut, Petra, and Vilafranca, the Regional Minister of Tourism, and the island director. The discussion was entitled "Opportunities for the Pla de Mallorca as a tourist destination linked to the primary sector."
Later, a presentation of the Sustainable Tourism Plan for the Pla de Mallorca took place, and the day concluded with another roundtable discussion featuring the mayors of Montuiri and Llubí, as well as the mayors of Sencelles, Santa Eugenia, Sineu, Sant Joan, and Costitx, on the topic of "Cycling tourism in the Pla de Mallorca: challenges and opportunities for the sector."
